The location of the film is very interesting. The fact that it’s in New York City is intriguing, but the fact that the mobster is in Las Vegas is even more intriguing. It makes you believe that the mob is everywhere, or at least a lot closer than we think. We’re not sure where the line between the two places is.
The plot is similar to Donnie Brasco but with a larger scope. Depp plays Tommy DeVito, the head of a well-known New York City crime family. When he senses that his son, Chris (Balthazar Getty), is going to turn informant, he sends him to Hawaii where he’ll be safe from the FBI. DeVito is still uneasy with Chris’ transformation from a local kid who makes the right moves to a mobster. He dislikes the idea that Chris could be a cop one minute and then a mobster the next.
The cover and the insert are in color. There is also a trailer for Donnie Brasco, and a photo gallery, where about 10 pictures are included. Audio commentary is also available. After the picture is the track listing, production notes, theatrical trailers for Dog Day Afternoon and Casino, and a trailer for Casino.
The ensemble cast is simply outstanding and includes a special performance from ‘The Hunger Games’ star Jennifer Lawrence as a mob wife who is determined to do whatever it takes to get her man back. Other impressive performances include Ed Harris as mob boss Frank Scalice and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Harris has a very dramatic performance and takes over the film for a large portion.
