Last year I was in the market for a scanner, and the only decent priced ones at the time were the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 and S2000. Both of those had a pretty bad stigma attached to them, mainly due to the fact that they're both tiny, inexpensive, and very easy to use. The S1500 in particular was meant to be the consumer replacement for the'more expensive' Kodak SCSI scanners. Both of these devices are great, but I found the ScanSnap S2000 to be the more flexible, higher quality, and the better of the two. I think it's one of the best ever made. It can be had for around $500 right now with the optional color monitor, A better color monitor is a little more expensive at the moment, about $150. It's one of the new non-compatibles with Leopard, and getting an older model and dealing with one of the proprietary drivers for OS X is one of the best stories about OS X I've ever heard. I had to run my Apple-supplied 2930CU SCSI card with the original 2930 driver until there were drivers available for newer SCSI cards released with Leopard, even though there are drivers for the newer cards available with OS X Tiger(10.4). I ran 10.4.11(not available on the older cards), and the drivers don't work unless you're running OS 9, as this card is really only designed to work with OS 9. There are quite a few ways to get around this, and they all involve a bit of research. A few people have said they're using older Epson and Hewlett Packard SCSI cards with OS X 10.4 to get around this, but I haven't tried any SCSI-based scanners with OS X 10.4 yet. I ended up getting a Toshiba SCSI card, and it worked great in 10.4.11. If you end up having any trouble, try this list of compatible SCSI cards and see if one of them works with 10.4.11. You can do this with all your scanners-some of them are on the list of compatible cards, and some are not. A few years back, when I had an Apple-supplied SCSI card, I also had a CD-RW drive, and used the SCSI card to read the CD-RW, and it worked great.
