After years of buying and returning best men's leather jackets, I've learned to spot quality issues before making purchases. Thought I'd share some warning signs that indicate you should probably look elsewhere.
Stitching is the most obvious indicator - uneven lines, loose threads, or skipped stitches suggest poor craftsmanship. Quality jackets have consistent, tight stitching throughout, especially in stress areas like armholes and pocket edges.
Hardware quality varies dramatically. Cheap zippers stick, break easily, or have rough edges that catch fabric. Same with snaps, buckles, and other metal components. Quality hardware operates smoothly and feels substantial.
Leather grain and finish tell you a lot about the hide quality. Genuine leather should have natural texture and some variation - perfectly uniform surfaces often indicate heavy processing or synthetic materials. The smell test works too - real leather has a distinct, pleasant aroma.
Interior construction matters more than people realize. Check the lining attachment, pocket construction, and how seams are finished on the inside. Rushed manufacturing shows up clearly in these hidden areas.
Price can be misleading in both directions. Extremely cheap jackets are almost always poor quality, but high prices don't guarantee good value either. Focus on the construction details rather than brand names or marketing claims.
